2009 Draft Results

2009 April 26

Here are my grades for the 2009 Draft Results.

( I hate ESPN for making me think & write about “grades” because they graded EVERYTHING!= F them for that.)

Overall Redskin Picks = C-

By pick:

  • 1st Round (13th pick Overall) Brian Orakpo, Texas / DE = B-    … Great value if you believe the hype.  I’m not a huge fan of Orakpo, see previous post, but I can’t hate too much because they didn’t up  trade for him.
  • 3rd Round (80th) Kevin Barnes, UMD / CB =B+ … Hard hitter.  Sounds like he’ll fit in with the skins defense.  Good to pick up a Conerback to go against the other WR’s the NFL East Drafted.
  • 5th Round (158th) Cody Glenn, Nebraska / LB = C- …Nothing stands out to me with this guy.  Should benefit special teams, but no impact anywhere else.  (Borderline “D” graded pick)
  • 6th Round (186th)Robert Henderson, TCU / LB= D- …  That’s a D FUCKING MINUS!  I don’t know what to say… this quote from NFL’s Draft Page sums it up,  “Pick Analysis: Henson is a shorter linebacker who runs really well. He will provide the Redskins with special teams help, but he’s not ready yet to contribute consistently on the defensive side of the ball.”.  WHAT!? How is this guy different than the player drafted in round 5… oh, he’s SHORT!  Snyder must love him.
  • 7th Round (221st Overall Pick) Eddie Williams, Idaho / TD= F …plus.  I am very pissed right now.  He does have H-back/Fullback potential which is a huge plus (so I’ll up my grade to an F+).  After a chance to read about this guy more, I do like him as a player, BUT, the skins don’t need him – unless Sellars is hurt, oh man, THAT would SUCK.
  • 7th Round (243th)…

Overall I give the skins draft choices a C – Minus.  I really can’t believe the skins didn’t draft an Offensive Tackle.  That’s worth -1 grade, drafting a TE!? even though he seems pretty versatile he’s not going to play O-Line, -1 grade, TWO fucking linebackers neither one with standout potential except for Special Teams -1 grade.  SHIT, I think the skins deserve a D!  Lets see how the last pick goes…

Other Team grades:

One non-NFC east team that stood out to me as having an A grade draft is the Baltimore Ravens.  I really like that OT, Michael Oher and their “Bob Sanders” like safety is scary.  Overall Draft Grade =A.

NFC East:

  • Dallas Draft grade = B.  Damn, thats a lot of picks.  Their first 4 of 5 were good picks, LB, OT 2 DE’s.  I don’t like that QB pick though, I don’t see the need.  They had a ton of picks though… damn.
  • Philly Grade = B.  Wow, the first 3 picks were offensive players, WR, RB, TE.  Wow.
  • Giants Grade = B.  Heavy on WR, also getting a RB, QB, OT, TE…   Their draft looks good too.  Fuck.
  • Overall NFL EAST (not including Skins) = A+!!!!  I like their players a lot more than the ones the skins drafted except for the QB & TE picks.  DAMN, FUCK, SHIT.

TV Converage:

  • NFLN = B+… Much better than ESPN.  Picks were almost always shown, good clips of players, good experts and Deon Sanders is funny.
  • ESPN=C … Watchable, Boomer makes it interesting but he also makes it suck.  Too much bumbling around and missed picks.  EA didn’t show enough skin either.
  • Overall=D… I think they timed their commercials to be shown at the same time.  Also, I thought I liked knowing who the pick was before the commissioner does, but I really don’t need to watch the player talk on the phone.  Show some game film instead, then I’m surprised when I see the commissioner say the name and the network might actually look like they called the pick.

Added Note:  I thought I heard on the radio today that the skins signed a FA Offensive Lineman.   Really?!  Who? How? For what?

This could be great news but I haven’t found any articles about it online, I heard its a guy from Buffalo, former first round draft pick and weighs 400+ POUNDS.

It’ll be nice to have Washington-area radio again… because I had not heard about the FA O-lineman. Thanks to your post, I’m less of a raving, self-destructive Skins fan than I was after seeing we did not draft a single O-lineman. I said to myself the only logical explanation was that they were on their way to signing someone. Of course, I didn’t believe that, but hey, maybe it is true!

I need to spend more time on this, but I’m okay with Orakpo, though that could be clouded by my glee from not having traded up for Sanchez. It’s a small, silly thing, but I did catch the Orakpo pick live, and really liked how we did it immediately and didn’t wait out the whole 10 minutes like every other team seems to do. I don’t know if it’s for football reasons that I like the quick move or draft-loathing reasons.

Time to search for 400 pounders.
